What is Perplexity SEO, and how do you rank on Perplexity?
Perplexity SEO means making your pages easy for Perplexity to find and cite. For every question, Perplexity runs a live web search and shows numbered links to the sources it used. If you want to rank there, let its crawler in, answer specific questions clearly with evidence behind them, and make sure your pages already do reasonably well on Google and Bing.
The short version:
- Perplexity’s help centre says it searches the web live and cites sources with numbered links.
- If your robots.txt blocks PerplexityBot, you can’t appear in its results.
- Perplexity-User, which fetches a page when someone asks about it, generally ignores robots.txt.
- You’ll get cited more often for a specific, well-sourced answer than for a general overview.
- Perplexity finds pages through web search, so your ordinary SEO still counts.
Perplexity is small next to Google, but a lot of its users are researching before they buy, and every answer links straight to its sources. A citation there can send you a real visitor, which a mention in a chatbot with no links can’t. We’ve stuck to what Perplexity itself documents, and where we’re guessing, we say so.
How does Perplexity choose which sources to cite?
It searches, reads what it finds and cites what it uses. Perplexity’s help centre says it interprets your question, “searches the internet, gathering information from authoritative sources like articles, websites, and journals,” and adds numbered citations “linking to the original sources.”
There’s no published ranking formula. Our guess, from how Perplexity describes the system, is that your page gets used more often when the crawler can reach it, when it answers the exact question asked, and when your claims match what other trusted sites say.
Which Perplexity crawlers should you allow?
You’ll want to allow PerplexityBot. Perplexity’s crawler documentation says PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity’s search results and isn’t used to collect data for training AI models. If you block it in robots.txt, your pages can’t appear in those results.
| Crawler | What it does | robots.txt |
|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot | Finds and links sites in Perplexity results | Honoured; allow it to be eligible |
| Perplexity-User | Visits a page when a user’s question needs it | Generally ignored, per Perplexity |
Perplexity says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to apply. It’s also worth checking Cloudflare, your hosting firewall or a WordPress security plugin, because some of them block AI bots before robots.txt is even read.
What kind of content gets cited in Perplexity?
Pages that answer something specific and show their evidence. If your page is called “Our Services”, it probably doesn’t answer anything precisely. Say you’re a web designer in Jaipur and you’ve got a page answering “how much does a GST-compliant website cost for a small shop?” with your real price range and the factors behind it. Perplexity can quote that.
Formats we’d lean on:
- comparisons (“X vs Y”) laid out in a table
- definitions that open with “X is…” before you explain
- guides broken into numbered steps
- pages carrying figures, dates or prices you’re willing to stand behind
- short FAQ answers to the questions your customers actually ask
How is Perplexity SEO different from Google SEO?
You do the same groundwork and get a different reward. Google gives you a ranked position and the chance of a click. Perplexity gives you a numbered citation inside its answer, and your reader can open it in one tap.
| Google SEO | Perplexity SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A ranked result | A numbered citation in an answer |
| Crawler | Googlebot | PerplexityBot |
| Best content shape | Strong page for a topic | Clear passage answering a specific question |
| How to check | Search Console | Ask Perplexity your customers’ questions; check referral visits |

What if Perplexity says something wrong about your business?
You’ll need to correct the pages it learned from. Perplexity writes its answers from the pages it finds, so a wrong price, an old address or a service you’ve dropped usually comes from something that’s still published somewhere: an outdated Justdial or IndiaMART listing, say, or an old page on your own site.
The numbered citations under the answer show you exactly which pages it relied on. Update your own pages first, then ask the directories and listing sites to fix theirs. Once those pages are recrawled, the answer usually corrects itself.
We’d repeat this check every 3 months or so. Your details change, and an answer built on old pages stays wrong until someone fixes them.
How to rank on Perplexity: step by step
- Open
yourdomain.com/robots.txtand confirm PerplexityBot isn’t blocked, then check your CDN’s bot settings. - Make sure your pages show up on Google and Bing. If they can’t find a page, Perplexity’s search probably can’t either. Our guide on why a website doesn’t show up on Google covers the usual causes.
- Ask Perplexity the 5 to 10 questions your customers ask most, and note which sites it cites.
- Rewrite your main pages so the question sits in a heading with a two-sentence answer underneath, then the detail.
- Add your prices, timelines, locations and named sources. A specific claim is easier for Perplexity to cite than a general one.
- Get your business listed and mentioned on other sites, such as Google Business Profile, local press and industry directories, so Perplexity can confirm what you say.
- Watch Google Analytics for
perplexity.aias a referral source.

What we would do first
Before you change anything, ask Perplexity about your business. Type the 3 questions customers ask you most often, add your city, and see who gets cited. If it’s always directories and competitors, your own pages probably don’t answer those questions directly.
Next, we’d check your robots.txt and CDN, because nothing else helps while the crawler’s blocked. Then we’d rewrite the opening of each important page. That’s part of our generative engine optimisation work.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in Perplexity answers?
You can’t buy Perplexity’s organic citations. If Perplexity runs ads in your market, they’re labelled as ads. We’d be wary of anyone who guarantees you Perplexity citations.
Does Perplexity use Google’s results?
Perplexity hasn’t said which search index it relies on. Its help centre only says it searches the internet and cites what it uses. Your normal SEO helps whichever index it is.
Do I need llms.txt for Perplexity?
Perplexity’s crawler documentation doesn’t mention llms.txt. It documents PerplexityBot and robots.txt, so allowing the crawler is what matters. An llms.txt file is optional at best.
How do I know if Perplexity sends me traffic?
Look for perplexity.ai as a session source in Google Analytics 4. Perplexity shows numbered source links, so its clicks usually arrive with a referrer, which some app-based AI traffic doesn’t.
Is Perplexity SEO worth it for a small business?
It is if your customers research before they buy, and most of the basics overlap with ordinary SEO anyway. We’d try the free checks above before you spend any money on it.
